Research Professor

Miguel Ferrer is Research Professor in Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and works on the Biological Station of Doñana (EBD), of which he was director from 1996 to 2000. He is director at large of the Raptor Research Foundation (US) since 1998 and president of Migres Foundation since 2003. He is a research associate at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary (USA) and adjunct professor at Boise State University (US) as well as external adviser for the University of Edinburgh (UK). In 2007 he joined the group of experts on Biodiversity and Global Change Council of Europe and in 2011 in the group of IPCC Expert Reviewers. In 2012 he was appointed Institutional Coordinator of CSIC in Andalusia.

He specializes in vertebrate ecology and behavior, conservation biology of birds of prey, especially the Spanish Imperial Eagle, bird migration and global change. He has published 11 books in Spanish and English and more than 120 scientific papers in major journals in the world (Ecology, J Appl Ecol, Biol Conserv, Conserv Biol). He teaches graduate courses in numerous European universities and has given about hundred lectures. Andalusia Environment Award 1999 for research on the toxic spill Aznalcóllar, “Special Distinction” from the Andalusian 2004 by the development of research applied to the conservation of endangered species and Frank and Frederick Hamestron 2005 Award, granted by the Raptor research Foundation, Inc. US, for excellence in scientific research and conservation of birds of prey and Watson Raptor Price Science award 2013, among other distinctions. Since 1992, the team led by Professor Miguel Ferrer has participated in numerous projects to evaluate demographic parameters of the Spanish imperial eagle and to establish mitigation of their artificial factors of mortality. He has also participated in drafting the recovery plan of the imperial eagle and osprey reintroduction in Andalusia.

He has participated in the organizing and scientific committee at international conferences such as IV Eurasian Congress on Raptors of the Raptor Research Foundation in Seville in 2001, the 1st and 2nd International Congress on Bird Migration and Global Change in Algeciras in 2007 and 2010 and in the 1st Iberian Congress about Wind Energy and Fauna Ibérica in Jerez de la Frontera in 2012.
